Pair of Japanese swords, daisho (litterally long-short).
Long sword dai, mounted as katana
Blade:
Total length 90,3 cm, length to ha-machi (notch at beginning of tang) 68,0 cm, width at ha-machi 3,0 cm.
Even curve with bohi (wide grove) all the way.
Hamon: (tempering) choji-ha (strong irregular, «clove like» line).
Nakago: (tang) suriage (shortened) 3 meguki ana (peg holes)
Mei: (signature) mumei (unsigned).
Fair condition.
Short sword wakizashi
Blade:
Total length 60,5 cm, length to ha-machi 47,0 cm, width at ha-machi 2,6 cm.
Even curve, no carvings
Hamon: (tempering) sugu midare-ha (straight with some irregularities)
Nakago: (tang) suriage (shortened) 2 mekugi ana (peg holes)
Mei: (signature) mumei (unsigned:
Good condition.
Koshirae (mounting)
As both blades are mounted in a similar way the mounts are described for the pair as such.
Saya: (scabbards) completely covered in large pieces of shell. Kurikata (cord loop) black laquered.
In the wakizashi scabbard a kozuka (byknife) decorated with the saga of Watanabe no Tsuna and the encounter at Rashomon gate.
Tsuba: (guards) in brass, shaped like flower heads, partly piereced (sugake).
Tsuka: (hilts) unusual. Instead of the ordinary white same (ray skin) the same has been covered in black laquer and then grinded down to a smooth surface.Over the same a wrapping of silk cord. All hilt mounts, i.e. fuchi-kashira (bottom and top mounts) of brass with extencive carving, slightly different on the two swords. On the katana leaves and praying mantis, on the wakizashi waves. Good quality. The fuchi on both with signature which is difficult to read but includes the information ..roku ju hachi nen, i.e 68 years (of age).
Both swords have 2 seppa(washers on both sides of tsuba) in brass with serrated edge.
The mounting as such is late Edo period. The blades are older, the dai probably late Koto, the sho most probably a bit later.
